Great Time To Bring The Little Ones Just Learning How To Skate!!
I’ve sat down to write this more times than I can count, never quite knowing where to start. When you watch a deeply personal dream come full circle, it brings on so many emotions.
Many of you have probably seen our dear friend Jacob Carroll at the rink almost every weekend. Jacob has been part of our family for years and was right there with us five years ago, helping get our newly acquired rink up and running in the skate center. Having cerebral palsy has never slowed him down—not even a little. He absolutely loves being at The Skatin’ Rink, and we are beyond grateful to have him as part of our rink family.
For the past two years, we’ve talked endlessly about one big question: How do we get Jacob out on the skating floor with us? We didn’t want something he could just sit in—because that’s not the same as skating upright, cruising around under that disco ball. We knew this idea needed the right people, and we believed if anyone could help make it happen, it would be the engineering team at Auburn University.
By pure chance and perfect timing, I connected with someone in AU’s engineering department who needed help obtaining medical records—and that opened the door for us to share our idea. What followed was nothing short of amazing. A talented, compassionate senior design team poured months of hard work, creativity, and heart into bringing this vision to life.
When you look at the picture, you don’t just see graduating students—you see a group of people who truly cared. We brought the idea, and they brought the knowledge to make it real. With RFM generously donating materials (thank you!), Jacob’s dad Heath lending his welding skills, and the students tying it all together, the end result exceeded anything we could have imagined. AU is even working to make this invention available to other rinks by sharing blueprints and resources, along with links to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, so more communities can benefit.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to (left to right) Jack Komlos, Sarah Mai Broaddus, Drew Hood, (Jacob) Yu Wang, Elizabeth Foster, and Abdalla Al Ali. You didn’t just complete a project—you changed a life. This simply would not have been possible without every single one of you. We love you for your dedication, your kindness, and the love you poured into this work.
We wish you nothing but success in your future careers. This project will always hold a special place in your hearts—and it will forever hold one in ours.
With sincere gratitude and so much love,
Jason and Carmen Turnham
